1 Lyons Velvet
A fast pile heavy velvet with a ground weave based on the 3 & 1 warp twill, but repeated on six picks. The loops are formed by the use of wires - There are three picks between each wire which bind the pile ends very firmly, and two ground ends are used to one pile end. All the pile ends are raised over each wire. The cloth is principally woven on the continent. -
2 Velvet, Lyons
VELVET, LYONSA velvet having a short nap, not secure in its back or foundations. Used chiefly for draperies and bows and in millinery for which it seems especially adapted. -
3 Double Velvet
Made by having the pile warp stretched between two layers of foundation cloths; a knife cuts the pile in the middle between the two layers. It is recorded that this idea was first worked in Zurich during the 18th century - Then in Lyons. Martin, a manufacturer at Tarare, applied the idea to plushes. During the early part of the 19th century Davis invented a double-velvet loom. In 1838 Guillot, Lyons, invented a double-velvet loom with vertical warp, the two layers of cloth being separated as the weaving progressed. -
4 Velours Parthenos
Obsolete French cut silk pile velvet, made at Lyons, about 21-in. wide, 2,400 warp ends for ground and 1,600 ends for pile, 8 picks including 2 rods for pile to a repeat. Similar to Crefeld velvet, but only one kind of weft was used. -
5 Ras De Saint Maur
A French serge of silk warp and silk, cotton or wool weft, dyed black and used for mourning garments; it had a taffeta back. This cloth is now known as Radsimir. Made during the 18th century. A silk velvet made with four rows of weft pile alternating with four picks of gold, or silver, or fancy core yarn and ordinary weft. Made at Tours and Lyons in the 18th century. -
6 Taffetas A Coulisses
French all-silk taffeta made with woven tubes running crosswise at frequent intervals. The fabric was made for the head-dress called " caleche," much in vogue during the first half of the 19th century, the narrow tubes serving to have whalebones slipped through to form the bonnet. Silk velvet was also made on the same principle and called " velours a Coulisses."
